Physics and astronomy explore the fundamental components of our cosmos. Through engaging educational experiences, you'll develop core understandings about both the universe and your academic pursuits.
Every MSc and PhD graduate receives a primary specialization in physics. Additional focused degree options with distinct curriculum requirements are available in astronomy, medical physics, and ocean physics.
The Physics and Astronomy Department provides graduate studies and research opportunities culminating in Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
Students beginning with a BSc typically enroll in the MSc program, which blends advanced coursework with independent research culminating in a thesis. Most students finish the MSc within two years.
The PhD program emphasizes research, normally requiring a completed MSc (or equivalent) for admission. However, exceptional MSc students may transition to the PhD program early through a transfer examination before completing their master's degree.
Both MSc and PhD candidates receive guidance from an assigned (provisional) advisor upon enrollment, supplemented by oversight from a faculty supervisory committee that monitors academic progress (detailed further below).
