Canada's human services sector is experiencing rapid expansion, emerging as one of the nation's fastest-growing economic areas. This growth brings increasing specialization, with new practice areas developing to address specific societal needs. Future demand will require social workers to fill positions in more specialized service organizations. Although generalist social work remains relevant in this evolving landscape, professionals now need targeted skills to succeed in the modern human services field. While foundational social work training remains essential, it no longer fully prepares practitioners for today's challenges. This program's primary objective is to equip graduates with comprehensive knowledge, values, and core competencies shared by all social workers, while preparing them for immediate entry into their chosen specialization. Each concentration builds on faculty expertise and was designed in close collaboration with partner organizations in relevant fields.
The Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency (ITR) specialization within the Master of Social Work program integrates personal, cultural, professional, and academic growth. Learners enhance self-understanding and professional capabilities by examining trauma histories within their families, communities, and cultural backgrounds. The curriculum helps students identify resilience through cultural traditions, ceremonies, and ancestral wisdom. Practical training opportunities with Elders, cultural advisors, experienced professionals, and reputable organizations provide immersive learning in trauma intervention specialties such as: program design, counseling for individuals and families, cultural ceremonies, trauma-sensitive education systems, policy advocacy, and community-based interventions.
