The Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs in Medical Science cover diverse areas including basic sciences, clinical sciences, and population health research. Students work closely with faculty mentors, gaining specialized training and access to Toronto's leading multidisciplinary research environment. These full-time MSc and PhD programs focus primarily on practical research rather than classroom instruction. The Institute of Medical Science (IMS) is particularly attractive to MDs pursuing careers as clinician-scientists, with graduates securing academic and healthcare positions across universities, government agencies, and private industry. IMS also participates in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Clinical Investigator Program (CIP).
Our Institute provides dynamic Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs spanning fundamental sciences, clinical research, and population health studies. Working with expert faculty mentors, students gain hands-on experience with Toronto's most advanced interdisciplinary research projects. Alumni frequently obtain influential roles as educators and healthcare leaders in academic institutions, government bodies, and corporate sectors. Biomedical Communication represents a unique interdisciplinary field combining art, science, medicine, and communication principles. Canada's only program of its kind, the Master of Science in Biomedical Communication (MScBMC) is among just four globally accredited programs in this specialty. The two-year MScBMC curriculum trains students to develop and assess various visual communication tools, from medical illustrations and animations to interactive media designs and virtual simulations.
