Established in 1946 as the Opera School, UofT Opera has cultivated an outstanding roster of graduates, featuring renowned performers like Jon Vickers, Teresa Stratas, Ermanno Mauro, Rosemarie Landry, Mark Pedrotti, Russell Braun, Adrianne Pieczonka, and Sally Dibblee. Each year, two major orchestral productions are staged at the MacMillan Theatre, boasting one of Canada's most advanced opera facilities. The program also offers various smaller workshop performances throughout the academic year.
The curriculum encompasses solo and group training in opera repertoire, along with courses in stage movement, acting, vocal diction, dance, Alexander technique, masterclasses, theatrical makeup, and personalized voice coaching. A select number of student repetiteurs and directors may enroll in the Diploma program. The department maintains strong ties with the Canadian Opera Company, providing students access to dress rehearsals and collaborative events like masterclasses and symposiums.
