The Master of Environmental Science is a one-year professional program primarily focused on coursework for the first two terms. During their final term, students participate in either a professional internship or conduct environmental research under faculty supervision. A part-time study option is also offered. This degree attracts students with undergraduate backgrounds in environmental science or related fields like geology, biology, chemistry, or engineering. Graduates are prepared for careers in government agencies, private sector firms, or NGOs that influence environmental policy and implementation. Specialization options include Conservation and Biodiversity, Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation, or the comprehensive Terrestrial and Aquatic Systems track.
The MEnvSc is an intensive 12-month program designed to produce skilled environmental science professionals, particularly for roles in industry, government bodies, and environmental policy/education institutions.
Analyzing how chemicals move through and affect ecosystems requires expertise across multiple scientific fields including biology, chemistry, physics, and geology. This interdisciplinary approach transcends traditional academic boundaries. The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at UTSC boasts the diverse faculty expertise needed to educate students for careers in environmental monitoring, evaluation, cleanup, and ecosystem recovery.
