The Master of Arts program delivers in-depth academic training across all facets of Italian literature while equipping students with essential research methodologies. The Graduate Department of Italian Studies provides two degree pathways: a one-year Master of Arts (M.A.) and a four-year Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The M.A. curriculum requires completion of 4.5 graduate-level courses and features an optional thesis component. For the Ph.D., students undertake coursework, comprehensive exams, and a dissertation. Italian studies were first listed in the 1840 academic calendar of Upper Canada Academy (later Victoria College, University of Toronto) before being officially established at the University of Toronto in 1853. The inaugural M.A. in Italian Studies was conferred in 1929, followed by the first Ph.D. in 1932 for research on Renaissance Italian Theater. Beatrice M. Corrigan made history as the first graduate to earn both degrees, subsequently achieving distinction as a celebrated scholar and faculty member in the Department.
