The University of Toronto's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures stands as Canada's most established and extensive German studies program, featuring 11 permanent faculty members who maintain our historic excellence in literary and intellectual traditions. Our academic community explores diverse fields including German film, critical theory, language instruction, Yiddish culture, medieval scholarship, travel writing, alongside post-colonial, psychoanalytic, and cross-cultural research.
Alumni have successfully obtained tenure-track academic roles and careers in creative fields, cultural initiatives, publishing, and educational leadership. Our graduate program prioritizes exposure to varied methodological perspectives from both our core faculty and affiliated departments. We foster professional development through involvement in faculty research, conference attendance (both domestic and international), and writing skill enhancement programs. The department nurtures an environment of collaborative scholarship marked by mutual respect and shared dedication to rigorous academic exploration.
