The University of Toronto's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures stands as Canada's most established and extensive German studies program, featuring 11 permanent faculty members who maintain our historic excellence in literary and intellectual traditions. Our academic community explores diverse fields including German film, critical theory, language instruction, Yiddish culture, medieval scholarship, travel writing, alongside post-colonial, psychoanalytic, and cross-cultural research.
Alumni have successfully obtained tenure-track academic roles and careers in creative fields, cultural initiatives, publishing, and educational leadership. Our graduate program prioritizes exposure to varied methodological perspectives from both our core faculty and affiliated departments. Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the one-year MA program in the field of German Literature, Culture and Theory must have completed an appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university that includes at least 6.0 full-course equivalents (FCEs) in German language, literature, and culture, with an average grade of at least a B plus.

a statement of up to 700 words outlining your research interests and reasons for embarking on graduate study
