Pharmacology and Toxicology are interdisciplinary life sciences that explore the characteristics of chemical substances and how they interact with biological systems. These fields establish the scientific foundation for analyzing chemical effects in healthcare, utilizing medications as treatments or research instruments, creating and regulating pharmaceutical products, and studying environmental contaminants and toxins in both natural and societal contexts. The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology provides four Specialist and two Major undergraduate programs, collaboratively administered by the Faculties of Arts and Science and Medicine. The Specialist tracks offer enhanced benefits, including hands-on training in advanced laboratory methods and practical experience through guided research initiatives and involvement in the Arts & Science Internship Program (details below). Aspiring graduate researchers or professionals in pharmacology/toxicology are advised to choose a Specialist program for its enriched experiential learning components.
Pharmacology and Biomedical Toxicology are interconnected disciplines, and the combined Specialist program merges the curricula of both fields. This integrated program covers pharmacological principles—focusing on therapeutic applications, mechanisms of action, and interactions of administered chemicals with biological targets—while biomedical toxicology investigates the detrimental impacts of external chemicals on individual and public health, emphasizing drug safety and chemical exposure risks. Biomedical toxicology encompasses evaluating the safety profiles and harmful effects of diverse substances (pharmaceuticals, herbal remedies, natural toxins, and environmental pollutants), particularly their implications for human health.
