The Human Biology Program is an undergraduate initiative jointly offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Medicine. Our curriculum explores human biology through multiple academic perspectives, combining elements from biological sciences, medical studies, social sciences, and humanities. This collaborative framework introduces students to the interdisciplinary nature of human biology while allowing for focused study in specific research areas.
A key goal of the Human Biology Program (HMB) is to cultivate essential skills in students: analytical and innovative thinking, independent learning, quantitative analysis, and strong communication and research abilities. HMB equips students for professional paths where interdisciplinary knowledge in biological and health sciences proves valuable. The program provides numerous hands-on learning experiences through innovative teaching faculty, academic collaborations across university departments, community engagement with Toronto organizations, and research opportunities in campus labs and affiliated hospital institutes.
Following first-year life science coursework, undergraduates can join the Human Biology program through various specializations: Fundamental Genetics and Applications, Global Health, Health and Disease, Human Biology, or Neuroscience. HMB students begin with core courses establishing fundamental knowledge before advancing to specialized subjects with more focused instruction, while also engaging in independent and collaborative learning. In their senior year, students deepen their analytical skills through specialized seminar courses that build upon their comprehensive study of human biology at the University of Toronto.
Neuroscience represents an interdisciplinary approach to studying the brain and nervous system, incorporating research across molecular, cellular, and organismal levels throughout human development. Neuroscience applications significantly contribute to understanding human behavior and developing diagnostic and treatment methods for neurological conditions. The HMB: Neuroscience programs aim to establish a strong knowledge base while helping students synthesize concepts from diverse fields into their neuroscience understanding.
