Materials science explores the composition, characteristics, and uses of diverse materials like metals, ceramics, glasses, and polymers. The field is currently experiencing groundbreaking scientific progress. Recent breakthroughs include research on amorphous metals, quasicrystals, liquid crystals, semiconductors, nanomaterials, high-temperature superconductors, biomaterials, ultra-strong polymers, advanced processing methods like ion implantation and laser melting, and innovative engineered materials such as industrial ceramics and composites. As an interdisciplinary field, it combines fundamental chemistry and physics with practical disciplines like metallurgy and polymer studies. Analytical methods include electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and surface analysis techniques like Auger spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
This program integrates foundational chemistry and physics with applied fields including metallurgy and ceramics. The Department of Materials Science in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering provides specialized courses. Ideal for students pursuing careers in solid-state, polymer, or composite materials industries, or graduate studies in chemistry or materials science, the program offers two pathways: the Materials Chemistry track with CHM499Y1 research or the Materials Science and Engineering track with MSE492H1 and MSE493H1 courses. The program holds accreditation from the Canadian Society for Chemistry.
