The Human Biology Program is an interdisciplinary undergraduate initiative jointly offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Medicine. Our curriculum explores human biology through multiple perspectives, combining insights from biological and medical sciences with social sciences and humanities. The program's framework introduces students to the multidisciplinary nature of human biology while allowing specialization in specific research areas.
A key goal of the Human Biology Program (HMB) is cultivating essential skills in students: innovative problem-solving, independent learning, data analysis, and clear communication. HMB equips students for professional paths where interdisciplinary knowledge in life and health sciences proves valuable. The program provides hands-on learning experiences through pioneering faculty, cross-departmental collaborations, community partnerships in Toronto, and research opportunities in university and hospital labs.
Following first-year life science coursework, undergraduates can enroll in specialized HMB tracks: Fundamental Genetics and Applications, Global Health, Health and Disease, Human Biology, or Neuroscience. Students begin with core courses establishing foundational knowledge before advancing to specialized subjects with greater emphasis on independent and collaborative learning. Senior students hone analytical skills through program-specific seminar courses that deepen their understanding of human biology concepts.
The HMB: Global Health specialization teaches core biological principles while examining how social, economic, and cultural factors influence health outcomes worldwide.
