Our three specialized programs—Geology, Environmental Geoscience, and Geophysics (a joint offering with the Physics Department)—equip students with the expertise to pursue advanced studies while qualifying them as professional geoscientists upon graduation. The Geology specialization delves into planetary solid-body phenomena, covering volcanic activity, sedimentary formations, orogeny, mineral and ore genesis, and Earth's evolutionary history. The Environmental Geoscience program expands this focus to include groundwater systems and biogeochemical cycles. Geophysics students learn to simulate physical planetary processes and employ advanced subsurface imaging techniques across four dimensions (space and time), with applications ranging from archaeological surveys to resource exploration and tectonic modeling.
The Geoscience Major combines foundational coursework with specialized electives tailored to individual interests. Students frequently combine this program with disciplines ranging from other sciences to geography, archaeology, economics, history, political science, and peace studies.
Our Earth and Environmental Systems Major adopts an integrative perspective on planetary systems and their evolution across geological timescales. This approach examines the complex interplay between Earth's lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere—providing crucial context for contemporary challenges like climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation.
All programs prioritize experiential learning through laboratory and field components. Each curriculum mandates at least one field course, with many offering optional excursions ranging from single-day trips to extended expeditions. Recent destinations include Newfoundland, the American Southwest, Hawaii, Chile, and New Zealand, with undergraduate research projects conducted in Turkey, Peru, Greece, and South Africa. These immersive experiences cultivate professional networks, teamwork abilities, practical skills, and meaningful faculty-student mentorship. We actively encourage participation in study abroad programs, internships, and collaborations with industry and NGOs to complement academic training.
