Economics is a social science that studies specific aspects of human behavior and significantly impacts a society's structure, prosperity, and growth.
A substantial portion of human endeavor focuses on fulfilling material needs. In numerous regions globally, most human energy must be devoted to securing fundamental necessities like food, clothing, and housing. Even in technologically advanced societies where these basics are relatively easy to obtain, the craving for additional goods and services seems endless. As a result, every society—whether capitalist, socialist, or communist—exhibits both competitive and cooperative traits. Competition arises as individuals vie for limited resources to satisfy personal desires, while cooperation emerges because organized production yields the greatest abundance of goods. Economics examines problems stemming from the tension between unlimited wants and scarce resources. Undergraduate economics education aims to introduce students to economic reasoning and prepare them to analyze modern economic issues critically. It also seeks to help students understand economic science's nature and the evolving directions of economic theory.
The UTM Co-op Internship Program (UTMCIP) offers opportunities for qualified students in the Economics Major, Economics and Political Science Specialist, and International Affairs Specialist programs. Admission is competitive and requires a separate application. UTMCIP participants must complete mandatory career preparation training along with a 12- or 16-month paid, full-time work placement. Typically, UTMCIP students complete their degrees in five years. Additional fees apply for this program.
This specialized program targets students pursuing finance careers, equipping them for roles in banking, investment services, insurance firms, and corporate or government finance departments. It also provides strong preparation for graduate studies in Economics or Financial Economics, with many courses emphasizing technical and analytical skills.
