Anthropology explores humanity, focusing on our origins, evolution, and diverse cultural expressions. This discipline investigates human experiences through both biological and cultural lenses, adopting a uniquely broad perspective. What sets anthropology apart is its comparative and historical methodology, along with its connections to both natural sciences and humanities. The field analyzes societies across time - from isolated communities to advanced civilizations and modern global networks.
Through this comprehensive approach, anthropology seeks to identify universal human traits while explaining cultural variations and societal transformations. Given its expansive scope, anthropology branches into four specialized areas: Socio-cultural Anthropology, Evolutionary Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Archaeology. Currently, the University of Toronto Scarborough provides programs primarily in Socio-cultural and Evolutionary Anthropology, with some Linguistic Anthropology courses tied to the Socio-cultural program and Archaeology offerings connected to Evolutionary studies.
