At its core, political science examines systems of power. Scholars and students in this field explore fundamental principles such as governance structures, civil rights, social equity, democratic participation, and legal fairness. Grounded in philosophical traditions, political science provides insights into contemporary issues including national identity versus global integration, causes of political tensions, results of resource allocation systems, and cooperative governance across different levels from municipal to international. The University of Toronto Mississauga's political science program equips students with analytical tools through five specialized areas: Political Philosophy, Canadian Government, Global Affairs, Cross-National Political Analysis, and Public Sector Management.
Reflecting UTM's guiding principles, the Political Science Department champions collaborative learning, original thinking, effective dialogue, progressive approaches, and environmental responsibility. These ideals form the bedrock of our academic instruction and scholarly investigations.
