The Music and Culture program delivers cutting-edge curriculum that explores music in its contemporary context, celebrating its rich diversity and multifaceted nature. Our instructors actively participate in performances, creative works, academic research, and community initiatives—all reflecting the program's dedication to accessibility, inclusivity, and empowerment. Catering to UTSC's diverse student body, the program fosters cultural, artistic, intellectual, and civic growth by connecting music with social, historical, and cultural themes. Through our courses, students cultivate independence and grow as innovative leaders in cultural community building. They establish, participate in, and energize musical communities both at UTSC and in wider society, emphasizing civic involvement, creative entrepreneurship, wellbeing, and community enrichment.
Numerous hands-on learning experiences throughout the program equip students for various music-related careers while also serving those pursuing music for personal growth. The Music and Culture curriculum enhances studies in diverse disciplines such as community education, arts administration, urban studies, technology, healthcare, cultural research, digital arts, communications, music pedagogy, behavioral science, social studies, fine arts, and visual culture.
Our program welcomes students from all musical skill levels and backgrounds. Certain courses involving performance or composition may require previous experience. While performance classes accept all students, they aren't designed for absolute beginners. The Small Ensembles course caters to students whose musical talents (in any genre) might not fit the three major ensembles (Concert Choir, Concert Band, String Orchestra). Music & Society courses primarily feature lectures combined with academic rigor and practical fieldwork in community-based research.
