Victoria College (Vic) is dedicated to offering students a personalized and welcoming university experience that extends beyond academics. Here, students and faculty collaborate to create a diverse community that celebrates creativity and thrives on intellectual challenges. From day one, Vic fosters an intimate learning atmosphere through unique first-year programs like the acclaimed Vic One initiative and the Vic One Hundred introductory seminars. All first-year students participate in small seminar courses, blending the resources of a top Canadian research university with the close-knit feel of a liberal arts college.
The Literature and Critical Theory program appeals to students eager to examine connections between literature and historical, cultural, political, social, and psychological influences. This program teaches students to analyze how contemporary issues relate to historical contexts while critically examining representations of the past and visions of the future. Through detailed, contextual examination of literary works and other cultural expressions—including artifacts, institutions, and social customs from various languages, regions, and time periods—students develop critical perspectives. Like all cultural production, literature transcends national borders, especially in our globalized era, while artistic mediums increasingly overlap. Since aesthetic standards evolve historically, the program encourages multilingual study and engagement with diverse media forms. Our curriculum investigates literary and cultural trends across languages, regions, historical periods, artistic mediums, and academic disciplines.
