Learning Italian goes beyond mastering a language—it involves exploring a vibrant literary tradition and multifaceted culture that has profoundly influenced Western civilization. For Canadians, Italy's impact holds particular importance: the significant Italian immigration has transformed our lifestyles while reinforcing traditional cultural influences, thereby broadening what it means to be Canadian. Italian pairs effectively with other modern languages, literature programs, and disciplines like European Studies, Literary Studies, and Mediaeval and Renaissance Studies, though its applications extend even further. Students can select from Specialist, Major, and Minor programs in Italian Studies, with courses available for both beginners and those with prior experience. All language classes incorporate speaking practice. Advanced students may bypass first-year language courses (consult the Undergraduate Coordinator for details). Upper-year students can enroll in 300 and 400-level courses, which cover diverse topics in language, literature, linguistics, culture, and film. Some literature, culture, and cinema courses are taught in English with no language prerequisite. Through Woodsworth College, students can study in Italy at the University of Siena during summer months, with bursaries available. Additionally, third-year students may apply for the Study Abroad Program in Italy via the Centre for International Experience.
