History is a dynamic field that shapes our future and remains a battleground in political discourse. Scholars examine bygone eras to comprehend them within their original context, uncover insights about our world's evolution, and impact contemporary society. Why do authoritarian governments attempt to regulate historical research? What makes understanding our collective past so threatening to those who wish to control populations? How can historical lessons inform our approach to modern global challenges?
Students of history develop both comprehensive perspectives on historical trajectories and specialized expertise in particular regions, eras, or thematic concentrations. They explore how societal shifts, political doctrines, economic patterns, and environmental transformations have interacted with human decisions to drive historical progress and create our current reality. Our distinguished faculty equip students with research methodologies, critical argumentation skills, and effective communication techniques. The curriculum covers historical writing processes, including evidence evaluation and the selection of theoretical approaches.
Our department provides Specialist, Major, and Minor degree options, along with a Law and History concentration for Majors and Specialists that serves as ideal preparation for legal studies. Qualified students may participate in the Arts & Science Internship Program in History (ASIP). Alumni apply their historical training across diverse sectors including legal practice, public service, education, cultural institutions, media production, international affairs, and urban development.
The Law and History concentration equips students with analytical tools to examine legal systems not just as enforcement mechanisms, but as carriers of cultural, social, and economic meaning. This program challenges students to question conventional definitions of law across different historical periods and geographical contexts.
