Exploring History is crucial for comprehending today's world. It presents diverse perspectives on how modern society evolved and highlights contrasts between past civilizations and our own. UTSC's History programs deliver an engaging overview of worldwide changes across the last two thousand years, with special attention to everyday people's roles in these shifts. Our courses examine global histories through intricate transnational relationships, addressing subjects like daily life, colonial impacts, gender dynamics, labor history, religious developments, environmental changes, city growth, intellectual movements, migration patterns, racial identities, and cultural artifacts. Historical discoveries rely on meticulous analysis of various sources—whether written documents, visual materials, or physical objects—and our programs stress essential analytical, investigative, and writing abilities valuable for historical study and numerous careers. As a flexible, cross-disciplinary field, History connects with multiple programs such as Classics, Global Asian Studies, African Studies, Gender Studies, and Food Studies, while also enriching coursework in Political Science, Philosophy, Literature, Arts, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, and Geography.
The History program employs diverse methodologies to develop comprehensive knowledge and competencies. Introductory courses (A-level) familiarize students with university-level historical study while preparing them for advanced global history exploration. Intermediate surveys (B-level) establish fundamental understanding of specific nations and world regions. Advanced classes (C-level) enable focused examination of particular eras, locations, or issues through lectures and small-group sessions. Specialized seminars (D-level) involve intensive investigation of specific historical questions, with students presenting their research through discussions, papers, and projects. All course levels span historical periods from ancient times to modernity and investigate regions worldwide, including North America, Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean, and South/East Asia.
