History is a dynamic field that shapes our future and remains a hotly debated topic in political discourse. Scholars examine bygone eras to comprehend them within their original context, uncover insights about our world's evolution, and impact contemporary society.
Those pursuing history develop both comprehensive historical perspectives and specialized expertise in particular regions, eras, or thematic areas. They explore how societal shifts, political beliefs, economic patterns, and environmental transformations have interacted with human decisions to drive historical progress and mold our modern reality. Our distinguished faculty equip students with research techniques, critical argumentation skills, and effective communication abilities. Learners discover historical methodology, including evidence analysis and the selection of theoretical approaches.
Our department provides Specialist, Major, and Minor degree options, plus a Law and History concentration for Majors and Specialists that explores legal history and prepares students for legal careers. Qualified students may join the Arts & Science Internship Program in History (ASIP). Alumni apply their historical training in diverse fields including law, governance, education, cultural institutions, media, urban development, and digital content creation. While offering curricular flexibility, our program maintains breadth requirements to guarantee exposure to both ancient and modern histories across global cultures.
The Law and History concentration develops analytical tools to examine legal power—not just as enforcement mechanisms but as carriers of cultural, social, and economic meaning. It challenges students to question traditional definitions of law across different historical periods and geographical contexts.
