This program offers students essential knowledge and understanding of key French studies areas: language, grammar, linguistics, literature, and culture.
The French curriculum features:
for language learners, ongoing practice to develop proficiency in written and spoken French, including listening and reading skills,
for translation students, specialized training in techniques, approaches, and recognizing structural and cultural contrasts between French and English,
for linguistics students, comprehensive study of French phonetics, syntax, semantics, and their societal connections,
for future French teachers, emphasis on educational theory and effective teaching methods,
for literature enthusiasts, foundational tools for literary criticism along with exposure to diverse francophone works across genres, regions, and eras,
for culture students, deeper exploration of francophone societies through historical, political, philosophical, and artistic perspectives.
Most French programs start with FREA01H3 Language Practice I, reinforcing prior learning and serving as a gateway to advanced courses for non-native speakers. FREA01H3 targets students with Grade 12 French or equivalent proficiency. All first-time French course registrants at the University of Toronto must complete the French Language Placement test (details below) to assess their appropriate starting level. French students can pursue study abroad opportunities for academic credit.
