The European Affairs Program cultivates multidisciplinary expertise on contemporary Europe, blending intensive language instruction with comprehensive studies of Europe's historical, political, and cultural landscape. For undergraduates seeking linguistic proficiency, cultural insight, and specialized understanding to navigate modern Europe effectively, this major offers diverse course options across multiple disciplines, emphasizing economics, history, languages, and political science. A European Affairs degree prepares students for advanced graduate studies or professional careers either in Europe or with Canadian organizations engaged in European relations.
Language proficiency forms the cornerstone of the European Affairs Program. Majors must develop practical fluency in one or more approved languages: Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Macedonian, Modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, or Ukrainian. Students may pursue language certification alongside their degree. To guarantee graduates possess both historical perspective and specialized knowledge alongside language skills, the curriculum balances core courses on Europe's political development and integration processes with electives from twelve participating academic departments. Those opting for a European Affairs minor will gain focused understanding of modern European studies.
