The Environmental Management programs (Specialist, Major, Minor, Sustainability Minor, Environmental Law and Policy Minor, and Combined MScSM) explore the intersection of environment, society, and public policy. The foundational second-year course, ENV201H5 Environmental and Resource Management, introduces students to the political and socioeconomic dimensions of environmental governance. Learners can subsequently specialize in areas like resource management, environmental assessment, and the societal impacts of ecological change.
Students may choose a Social Science-oriented track (featuring courses like Environmental Politics in Canada, Sociology of the Environment, or Economic and Ecological Perspectives on the Environment) or a Humanities-focused path (including Environmental Ethics, Canadian Environmental History, or Environmental Literature). All Environmental Management programs emphasize hands-on learning and research opportunities, while requiring fundamental Science coursework. Similar to Environmental Science programs, the entry point is ENV100Y5 The Environment, a Science-based course recognizing that future environmental leaders need scientific literacy. Those uncertain about their academic direction should consult Program Advisors and Academic Counsellors regularly.
Environmental Management Specialists or Majors considering the Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM) at UTM can apply for the Combined Degree Program. This accelerated pathway enables undergraduates to take graduate-level MScSM courses during their fourth year, counting toward both degrees. Successful candidates earn both their bachelor's degree and MScSM upon completion.
Applications for the Combined Degree Program occur in third year, requiring an interview for provisional MScSM admission. Accepted students collaborate with the MScSM Director to select suitable graduate courses for their final undergraduate year.
