The English department at UTSC provides programs focusing on literature, creative writing, and film studies. Literature students delve into diverse textual forms—from classic fiction and poetry to contemporary graphic novels and narrative video games—through courses spanning different eras and cultures. Film studies analyze cinematic works within various historical and cultural frameworks. Creative writing students hone their craft across multiple genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and screenwriting. Our curriculum fosters critical thinking about artistic forms as vehicles for expression and examines the interplay between art and society. UTSC's English programs equip students with analytical skills to interpret how people have documented and interpreted the world, empowering them to engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues through language and discourse.
Students should review prerequisites for upper-level courses when designing their academic plans and consult the Program Supervisor before enrolling in courses at other campuses. Those considering graduate studies in English should take ENGC15H3 (mandatory for English Specialists) and explore ENGD98Y3, an advanced seminar where eligible students craft a senior thesis under faculty guidance. The Program Supervisor offers tailored advising for students preparing for graduate studies.
The English Major (Co-op) Program integrates academic learning with professional experience through paid work placements in various sectors. This Work Integrated Learning (WIL) initiative helps students build both scholarly and career-oriented competencies, preparing them for employment or advanced studies in English-related fields.
Beyond coursework, students must complete preparatory Arts & Science Co-op training and at least two Co-op work terms to fulfill program requirements.
