The Department of East Asian Studies enables students to gain comprehensive knowledge about the historical, cultural, and linguistic aspects of East Asia across different time periods. Our curriculum explores the rich diversity of East Asian traditions, covering everything from modern cinema and political systems to classical philosophical thought, while critically analyzing the frameworks that shape this region as an academic discipline. Students can choose from extensive course options in East Asian literature, history, philosophy, religious studies, and social sciences, along with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language instruction at all proficiency levels. In today's interconnected world, an East Asian Studies degree serves as a valuable foundation for professions requiring bilingual abilities, sharp analytical thinking, and thorough comprehension of East Asia's socio-historical and cultural backgrounds. Our Major and Specialist programs prepare graduates for paths in education, academia, global commerce, legal practice, diplomacy, and cultural organizations.
For guidance on course choices or academic planning, students should reach out to the Undergraduate Coordinator, though all faculty members are available to discuss their courses and provide recommendations. In partnership with Woodsworth College, the Department conducts summer courses at the University of Hong Kong, and through the Centre for International Experience, facilitates student exchanges with institutions across China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore.
