Anthropology explores humanity, examining our origins, evolution, and diverse cultural expressions. This discipline investigates human experiences through both biological and cultural lenses, distinguishing itself from other social sciences through its comparative, historical perspective and connections to natural sciences and humanities. Anthropologists analyze societies across time - from isolated communities to advanced civilizations and modern global networks.
This broad perspective allows anthropology to identify universal human traits while understanding what drives cultural diversity and social transformation.
Given its expansive scope, anthropology branches into four specialized areas: Socio-cultural Anthropology, Evolutionary Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Archaeology. Currently, the University of Toronto Scarborough provides programs focusing on two primary concentrations: Socio-cultural and Evolutionary Anthropology. The curriculum includes some Linguistic Anthropology courses aligned with the Socio-cultural track, along with Archaeology studies connected to the Evolutionary approach.
