As Canada's first school of social work, the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto has pioneered education, policy development, research, and professional practice for more than a century. The Faculty provides both professional and academic programs culminating in Master of Social Work (MSW) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The PhD program specifically aims to develop future leaders in social work education, research, and community engagement. Admission to the doctoral program is competitive, with preference given to candidates demonstrating significant scholarly accomplishments and professional experience. The PhD program at Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work operates exclusively as a full-time commitment. Students must complete a minimum of 12 academic sessions (Fall, Winter, Summer) of continuous enrollment. While designed for four-year completion, the program allows up to six years for degree fulfillment when necessary. Doctoral candidates must achieve three key milestones: completing required coursework, passing either a Comprehensive Paper or Exam, and successfully defending their Thesis.
