The Doctor of Philosophy program equips students for academic careers in teaching and research. Upon completion, graduates should demonstrate independent research capabilities, the ability to produce scholarly works, and proficiency in teaching both undergraduate Italian studies courses and specialized graduate-level classes. This curriculum offers comprehensive disciplinary knowledge, focused expertise in a chosen area, and thorough training in academic research methodologies.
The Ph.D. program develops students for professional roles in academia. Graduates gain the skills to independently conduct research, publish academic works, instruct undergraduate Italian studies courses, and create specialized graduate curricula.
This program delivers extensive foundational knowledge, concentrated expertise in a specific field, and complete preparation for scholarly investigation within the discipline.
Successful completion of the University of Toronto MA or its equivalent with an overall average of at least A– in courses. Please note that an A– average does not guarantee admission to the program
PhD Program (Direct-Entry)
Exceptional students may be admitted directly to the PhD program from the BA with a minimum A– average. Such applicants will apply to the MA program, but indicate in a separate letter to the Graduate Coordinator that they wish to be considered for direct admission to the PhD program.
English language requirements
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
