The Department of Immunology provides graduate studies culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees across diverse immunological fields. These areas encompass molecular processes in lymphocyte development and selection, T-cell and B-cell receptor functions, cellular interactions, growth factor receptors, cytokine systems, antigen handling and presentation, lymphocyte signaling pathways, V(D)J recombination, immune tolerance, programmed cell death, genetically modified animal models, immunotherapeutic strategies and vaccine development, autoimmune disorders, HIV/AIDS, diabetes mellitus, and transplant immunology.
The department serves as a collaborative hub for researchers across the University of Toronto, offering cross-disciplinary training in immunology. Faculty and students are based at the Medical Sciences Building, Ontario Cancer Institute, and research facilities of Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, The Hospital for Sick Children, and Sunnybrook Hospital. The PhD program represents an advanced research qualification designed to equip graduates with the expertise to work as independent research scientists. This requires completion of coursework demonstrating proficiency in contemporary immunology, along with proven capability to conduct research meeting publication standards.
Applicants who have completed an MSc degree must have at least a B+ average in that degree.
