The CSB PhD program strives to cultivate scientists who will join the next wave of independent researchers in cellular, molecular, and systems biology, becoming future educators, innovators, and leaders in these disciplines. Accordingly, PhD graduates should complete the program as self-sufficient researchers, producing a thesis containing original work that demonstrates their capacity to create publishable, independent contributions to scientific literature. During their training, PhD candidates will develop scientific communication abilities (including teaching expertise) and gain comprehensive understanding of their field's theoretical and practical foundations. The Ph.D. program spans four years for students entering with an M.Sc. or five years for those with a B.Sc. Exceptional students may transition from the M.Sc. to the Ph.D. program after one year. All candidates must complete an evaluation within their first 20 months.
The CSB Department is dedicated to delivering outstanding graduate programs that educate and guide students in Cell, Molecular, and Systems Biology. We uphold this mission by fostering a top-tier research and learning environment that ensures rigorous, globally-recognized graduate education. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of CSB fields, our programs emphasize exposure to diverse research areas and methodologies. CSB graduate students utilize advanced facilities and innovative techniques throughout their studies, engaging with cutting-edge research in functional genomics, genetics, metabolomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, and physiology.
