Biochemistry explores molecular mechanisms behind biological phenomena, serving as a foundational science for all fields involving living organisms. The biochemistry graduate program offers students access to state-of-the-art research facilities, pursuing Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees across diverse specializations. These include investigating structure-function relationships in biomolecules like proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, as well as complex systems such as cellular membranes and organelles.
A cell's proper operation and developmental trajectory are governed by precise gene expression patterns, influenced by signaling molecules that activate regulatory pathways. The gene expression process initiates in the nucleus with DNA transcription into RNA. These RNA molecules undergo processing, form ribonucleoprotein complexes, get transported to the cytoplasm, reach their target locations, get translated into proteins, and eventually break down. Furthermore, eukaryotic transcription demonstrates inherent variability, raising questions about how organisms effectively retrieve genetic information from this noisy background.
