The Doctor of Education (EdD) in Social Justice Education (SJE) caters to professionals and volunteers seeking to bridge theory and practice in fields where visionary, skilled, and research-driven practitioners significantly impact outcomes. Unlike the PhD, this program emphasizes both applied and theoretical aspects of educational practice, encompassing knowledge, teaching, and learning within and beyond traditional school settings. Students can pursue doctoral studies while engaging in social change initiatives, making the EdD ideal for diverse professionals such as educators, community leaders, healthcare providers, legal experts, and others involved in social justice education.
Housed within OISE's Department of Social Justice Education, the program fosters critical analysis of education's social, historical, cultural, political, economic, and ethical dimensions. Drawing from humanities and social sciences, the department promotes interdisciplinary approaches to education with a strong equity focus, examining issues through historical, philosophical, sociological, and social justice education lenses.
