The Faculty of Music provides two undergraduate programs: the Bachelor of Music (Mus.Bac.) and the Bachelor of Music in Performance (Mus.Bac.Perf.). Performance majors start their specialized training immediately in first year, while other Bachelor of Music students—except those in Music Education (Classical & Jazz), Composition, or Comprehensive Studies Jazz—complete a Common Year. This foundational year focuses on core requirements while allowing students to explore potential concentrations in History, Culture, & Theory or Comprehensive Studies. Those interested in Music Education (Classical) or Composition may also delay their specialization until Year 2 after finishing the Common Year. Every student must fulfill core Basic Music requirements, covering essential studies in history, theory, and performance—establishing a shared academic foundation for all.
Prospective students need to show substantial dedication to creating music rooted in Western classical traditions. Composition applicants must undergo a first-year-end interview with the Composition Division committee, where they'll present their compositional work for program admission consideration.
The University of Toronto's Composition program offers a robust, versatile curriculum designed to deliver a tailored educational journey. Our renowned faculty members contribute diverse expertise as educators, performers, innovators, and scholars, fostering a dynamic learning atmosphere.
