The Master of Fine Arts in Writing is a two-year graduate program. Typically, students graduate in the fall semester following their second year, with thesis defenses usually occurring in late August or early September. Under special conditions, candidates may defend their thesis as early as June.
This intensive program requires full-time commitment, with participants expected to dedicate most of their time to coursework. Writing workshops are conducted exclusively in-person, without online options. Throughout both years, students engage with diverse courses, culminating in a thesis project during the second year. Thesis options include novels, creative nonfiction works, plays, or collections of poetry or short stories.
Students collaborate closely with established writers whose expertise aligns with their creative projects. Saskatoon's vibrant literary scene fosters writing excellence, featuring weekly poetry slams, independent theater groups, numerous publishing houses, and acclaimed authors. Since 2013, the program has hosted the River Volta Reading Series, a community-based event organized by students.
