The English Department offers graduate programs in literary studies leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.
For the M.A., students can choose between a thesis track or project track, involving coursework plus either a language requirement (thesis option) or completion and defense of a thesis/project. The Ph.D. program includes coursework, language proficiency, a Field Exam, plus dissertation proposal, completion, and defense. Typically, the M.A. takes 1-2 years to complete, while the Ph.D. requires at least four years.
