The Physics Professional Internship Option allows students to gain up to 16 months of supervised work experience with an approved employer while fulfilling their Physics degree requirements. Typically, students begin this placement after completing three years of their four-year Physics program, running from May 1 to August 31 of the following year. Shorter 4, 8, or 12-month internships may also be available. Note that this internship differs from summer employment. To qualify as a Professional Internship, the temporary position must meet these criteria:
The hosting organization must benefit from the student's university-acquired skills and training.
Faculty from the student's department or related fields cannot act as employers or supervisors.
The internship must occur continuously, though vacation periods are allowed—combining multiple short-term jobs does not qualify.
The Physics and Engineering Physics Undergraduate Affairs Committee (UAC) Chair evaluates internship proposals. If denied, students may appeal in writing to the Department Head within two weeks of the decision, whose ruling is final.
