Archaeology examines artifacts and physical remnants from ancient societies to uncover insights about human cultural diversity and adaptation. Through tools, shelters, ornaments, food remains, altered landscapes, and even skeletal evidence, archaeologists piece together past human behaviors and lifestyles.
This program concentrates on the indigenous peoples of western Canada and the Circumpolar North. Students gain hands-on experience excavating archaeological sites while mastering various laboratory methods. These techniques involve analyzing artifacts, human and animal bones, and other archaeological finds. The curriculum explores how past communities interacted with their environments and how researchers formulate and evaluate sociocultural theories about ancient human experiences. Ultimately, students discover patterns in historical human behavior to better comprehend present and future societal changes.
