MEng applicants from non-engineering backgrounds, or from backgrounds lacking course work normally taken by Canadian engineering undergraduates, are welcome. Applicants who lack experience in Engineering design, law, professionalism and ethics, and economics may be admitted as “qualifying students.” Students who satisfactorily complete the qualifying courses in their first year continue in the MEng program. Normally, applicants to the PhD program will have completed a thesis-based master’s degree in engineering or a closely related field. However, applicants with a MEng degree may be admitted to the PhD program but are required to take at least one additional course in research methodology. All MASc and PhD students must have an identified supervisor from Electronic Systems Engineering. A graduating average of at least 70 per cent from a four-year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) is required for admission to all programs except for English, History, Mathematics and Statistics and the Master of Public Administration where the required average is 75 per cent.
