This doctoral program is one of two offered by the Faculty of Science, with the alternative being the PhD in Environmental Sciences.

Designed for intensive research, this PhD program unites UPEI's science faculty researchers to explore molecular chemistry, physics, and biology across all scales. The curriculum includes graduate courses, dissertation work, candidacy exams, and a final defense, while fostering valuable industry connections. While specializing in molecular chemistry and/or physics, students will complete three MBA-level business courses essential for applying scientific knowledge commercially. A capstone project pairs students with companies to synthesize their cross-disciplinary expertise.

Research opportunities cover diverse molecular and macromolecular science (MMS) areas—including biodegradable polymer synthesis, marine natural products analysis, supramolecular systems, and intercalation chemistry, alongside theoretical investigations of molecules, materials, and motion, plus applied research in imaging, drug delivery systems, and battery technology.
