Spanish is spoken by more than 600 million people worldwide, ranking as the second most common language in the United States. Its significance continues to grow in Canada due to expanding trade relationships under NAFTA and growing connections with Spanish-speaking nations. This rising demand creates career opportunities for translators, interpreters, and educators across various sectors including tourism, finance, government, and international relations.
Studying Spanish pairs exceptionally well with UPEI programs in Business, Veterinary Medicine, and Environmental Studies, while also opening doors to careers throughout the Americas and Europe. As the sole provider of Spanish language education in Prince Edward Island, UPEI welcomes beginners through its introductory 1000-level courses, while offering placement tests for students with prior exposure through schooling, cultural exchanges, or personal experiences.
The curriculum progresses from foundational language skills in 1000-2000 level courses to advanced cultural studies in upper-level classes. Students can pursue either a seven-course minor or a full major in Spanish, with the latter requiring two semesters abroad at partner institutions like Spain's University of Salamanca, Chile's Academia de Humanismo Cristiano, or Uruguay's Universidad de la Rep√∫blica.
