The Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics focuses on studying the connections between human communities and the natural environment. The curriculum covers diverse disciplines such as human and physical geography, environmental science, and geospatial technologies. Key research areas encompass Arctic and Antarctic studies, metropolitan geography, global warming, and geospatial analysis techniques.
Beyond bachelor's degrees, the department provides two-year research-focused MA and MSc degrees, a one-year course-based interdisciplinary MSc specialization in The Anthropocene, and doctoral studies in Geography. Graduate students may also enroll in the joint Science, Society and Policy initiative. All graduate programs adhere to the university's standard academic regulations.
The Science, Society and Policy program aims to equip students with analytical tools for addressing complex issues at the intersection of scientific research and public policy. Participants examine how research informs policy decisions, how regulations influence scientific progress, and the societal impacts of technological advancements.
To be admissible to the master's program, the student must hold an BA with honours in geography or in a related discipline with an academic record indicating at least (B+) or the equivalent. Candidates whose bachelor's degree with honours (or the equivalent) is in an area other than geography may be admitted for a qualifying period, during which they must take selected courses required in the department's BA with honours program.
