Founded in 1984, the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biology (OCIB) brings together the research capabilities of both the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. The Institute provides graduate studies culminating in MSc and PhD degrees in Biology.
Research resources are jointly utilized across both campuses. Enrolled students can benefit from faculty members, academic courses, and infrastructure at both institutions.
The Institute participates in the joint Chemical and Environmental Toxicology program (available at both master's and doctoral levels).
Toxicology examines how harmful substances impact living organisms. These substances may include organic or inorganic compounds, whether synthetic or naturally occurring. Environmental toxicology additionally explores chemical movement, persistence, accumulation in ecosystems, and their broader ecological consequences. Although researchers often focus on specific domains, modern toxicologists need interdisciplinary awareness to comprehend advancements across related fields. To address this need, the University of Ottawa and Carleton University jointly offer specialized master's and doctoral programs in chemical and environmental toxicology.
