Physiotherapy is an autonomous healthcare field dedicated to enhancing wellness, fitness, and overall health. This profession delivers personalized primary care services to assist individuals in preserving and restoring their functional autonomy while addressing pain, mobility restrictions, disabilities, and barriers to activity engagement (Canadian Physiotherapy Association, 2000). The program aims to develop bilingual physiotherapy professionals capable of serving Francophone populations in Ontario and French-speaking communities nationwide, while advancing research and educational excellence.
The curriculum emphasizes patient-focused care and incorporates research-driven evidence into clinical practice. Its foundational structure combines human movement sciences (including kinesiology and pathokinesiology) with clinical sciences, adopting the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as the benchmark for assessing health and disability.
The MHSc in Physiotherapy is an intensive two-year program spanning six consecutive terms. Participants must fulfill 60 academic credits and complete 1,025 hours of practical training, which may occur in Ottawa-region healthcare facilities, educational institutions, rehabilitation centers, or other locations across Canada.
This program adheres to the national curriculum standards set by the Canadian Council of Physiotherapy University Programs. Graduates seeking licensure with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario must pass the national competency examination administered by the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators.
As the program's primary objective is preparing bilingual practitioners for Francophone communities, instruction is exclusively in French. However, students may submit coursework and examinations in either French or English. While French is the primary teaching language, clinical placements may occur in French, bilingual, or English environments, requiring students to possess functional English proficiency.
