The School of Translation and Interpretation (STI) provides advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Arts in Translation Studies (MA), Master in Conference Interpreting (MCI), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Translation Studies.
The PhD program in translation studies aims to develop skilled academics for teaching and scholarly work in this discipline.
The doctoral curriculum emphasizes:
Translation theories, historical perspectives, and teaching methodologies as forms of cross-language and cross-cultural communication.
The application of lexicology, terminology, and technological tools to translation practice.
Given translation's interdisciplinary nature, the PhD program may work with departments like Law, English, Canadian Studies, French, Modern Languages and Literatures, Linguistics, Philosophy, and the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE). Program administration remains exclusively under the School of Translation and Interpretation.
This intensive program requires completion of four courses, comprehensive examinations, and a dissertation.
The department also contributes to a joint Canadian Studies initiative at the doctoral level.
MA in Translation Studies or equivalent, with a minimum average of B+ (75%).
