The School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies provides these academic programs: Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in sociology, along with a Master of Arts (MA) in anthropology. The School also contributes to these joint programs: women's studies at the master's level and Canadian studies at the doctoral level.
The sociology MA program is available both full-time and part-time, with instruction in French and English. For English admissions, yearly intake limits follow the guidelines outlined in the "Admission Requirements" section. Following University of Ottawa policy, students may complete assignments, research papers, theses, and exams in either English or French.
The master's program offers two pathways: the thesis-based MA and the research paper MA, with eligible students having the option to include cooperative education.
The sociology PhD program operates exclusively as a full-time offering in both English and French, though mandatory seminars are conducted solely in French. This doctoral program prepares sociologists to investigate social relationships that shape modern societies' living conditions and transformations, employing cutting-edge theoretical and methodological approaches. Its primary research focuses include minority and cultural studies, along with political sociology.
To be admitted to the PhD program, applicants must hold a master's degree in sociology (or equivalent) and have an overall average of at least 75% (B+), calculated in accordance with graduate studies guidelines.
