Linguistics is the scientific study of language structure, its function in human communication, and its connection to our biological and cognitive makeup. While classified among the humanities due to its focus on human-language interactions, it also qualifies as a precise science through its methodical analysis of linguistic phenomena and application of experimental techniques.
Our Linguistics Department provides advanced degree programs culminating in MA and PhD qualifications. Students can tailor their studies to concentrate on specific research domains by choosing appropriate coursework. Specialization options encompass: core linguistic theory (covering phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics), language learning processes (both first and additional languages), psychological aspects of language, brain-language relationships, and social dimensions of language use. Comprehensive program details – including faculty research specialties, course outlines, and academic guidance systems – are available in the departmental handbook.
Additionally, the Department contributes to an interdisciplinary PhD program in Canadian Studies. Further particulars about this collaborative initiative can be found under the "Admission Requirements" section.
