This distinctive program employs a groundbreaking experiential and comprehensive teaching approach that blends interdisciplinary methods with hands-on learning to introduce Indigenous students to legal studies. The wisdom of Mother Earth forms the core of Indigenous legal traditions. As these legal systems are traditionally passed down orally, instruction will emphasize storytelling through sharing circles and dialogue.
Designed specifically for Indigenous participants, the program first explores the legal frameworks of various Indigenous communities across Canada, then contrasts them with state legal systems in crucial areas of law. Students will gain familiarity with the origins, foundations, principles, and regulations of both Indigenous and state legal systems, particularly focusing on Quebec's civil law. By examining these legal traditions side by side, Indigenous learners will develop critical perspectives on the dynamics and boundaries between different legal frameworks. Furthermore, the program equips Indigenous students with fundamental skills, including state law knowledge, to prepare them for successful completion of a civil law degree.
