Mathematics and statistics serve as both exceptional problem-solving instruments and profoundly imaginative disciplines, blending creativity with analytical reasoning, and exactness with instinct.
Mathematics extends far beyond mere numerals Its fundamental purpose is to uncover and simulate universal patterns that help interpret our reality, whether observed in neural electrical signals, wildlife population dynamics in ecosystems, stock market variations, or digital communications. The influence of mathematics stretches well beyond STEM fields into healthcare, commerce, and social sciences.
Breakthroughs in mathematics and statistics underpin numerous innovations integral to modern life, including medical imaging technology, audio-visual data compression, encrypted digital exchanges, information analysis, DNA sequencing methods, derivative valuation, and countless other advancements.
Our Mathematics and Statistics Department provides specialized Honours tracks, major and minor concentrations in both disciplines. The Statistics Honours program holds accreditation from the Statistical Society of Canada, enabling graduates to obtain the A.Stat. professional certification. Additionally, we offer combined Honours programs in mathematics-economics and mathematics-computer science, along with an interdisciplinary financial mathematics and economics curriculum. All Honours programs incorporate cooperative education opportunities.
Have you pondered why economic disparities exist between nations? Questioned the causes of increasing wealth inequality? Wondered why Canadian leaders monitor foreign debt crises? Economics provides insights into all these inquiries.
Economics analyzes decision-making processes by individuals and societies amidst finite resources. It investigates the creation, allocation, and utilization of products and services, emphasizing two key principles: optimal resource utilization (efficiency) and equitable distribution (fairness). As choice-making permeates all human endeavors, economic study frequently elucidates behavioral patterns of people and governments.
