Physics researchers have transformed modern living through pioneering innovations and cutting-edge technologies that extend into disciplines like biology and finance. Our faculty members and alumni play a crucial role in this ongoing advancement. Numerous professors have earned accolades for both their teaching excellence and their status as leading global experts in specialized research areas.
Faculty research within the Physics Department focuses on key sub-disciplines, including biological and complex systems physics, condensed matter physics, photonics, and geomaterials physics. Students can engage with these specialized fields through coursework and research projects tailored to their selected program.
Beyond the Honours BSc in Physics, we provide three additional specialized programs. The physics-mathematics track combines advanced mathematical training with core physics studies. The photonics specialization delivers comprehensive physics education alongside practical, industry-focused photonics training. The biological physics option equips students to apply physics principles to life sciences. Our Major in Physics serves as a foundation for an Honours BSc when paired with another science major/minor or cross-faculty discipline. Beginning fall 2016, we'll introduce a distinctive five-year dual degree combining physics (BSc) and electrical engineering (BASc), developed in collaboration with SEECS. This integrated program delivers complete training in both fields, preparing graduates for high demand in both industrial and academic sectors as innovators capable of transforming fundamental physics concepts into real-world applications.
